On Friday 12th July, the Book Bus visited our school once again. Thanks to all of your purchases on the day, it sold over £650 worth of books! That means that we are able to purchase some more amazing books for medal winner prizes from the Book People! Thank you.
New Reading Scheme!
We can now confirm that we have purchased a whole new reading scheme to be launched in September! More details to follow soon!
Reading Updates - March 2019
Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you so much for your many purchases at our Scholastic Book Fair this January; we were overwhelmed with just how much Shelton Junior School loves reading! Thanks to you, we managed to raise... over £1,300!!! This means that we were able to match the exact amount in FREE BOOKS from Scholastic.
As a result, each year group now has a Reading for Pleasure Library Box, full of brand new books by popular authors, as well as some non-fiction texts. During Reading for Pleasure times, our children will have the pleasure of sharing and enjoying these new books! In addition to this, we have been able to add new stock to our prize box! Every Friday, the medal winners are lucky enough to be able to choose a book to take home with them and treasure. Below is just a selection of the books on offer...
World Book Day
On Thursday 7th March, the whole school celebrated World Book Day. This year's theme was 'Picture books that children can relate to, giving them a window on the world and a mirror of themselves'. Each year group enjoyed exploring picture books with an important message and the children created some beautiful work.
Year 3 - Leaf
Year 4 - The Only Way is Badger
Year 5 - Ruby's Worry
Year 6 - Wisp: A Story of Hope
As well as this, of course, we had our annual dressing up competition! A child from each class was chosen for 'best costume'. The winners were announced in assembly and they were able to choose a book to take home as their prize! Throughout the day, we had lots of opportunities to 'Drop Everything And Read' and held a Book Swap during break time. A fabulous day was had by all! Parents, thank you for your support with World Book Day costumes.
At the beginning of the half-term, all school staff took part in some training to develop our own, and the children's 'metacognitive skills', with a particular focus on reading. The next day, a special assembly was held to introduce the 'Shelton Superpowers' (more about these to follow later on in the year):
Soon, the children will be designing a superhero for each of our superpowers. The School Council will choose a winning entry from each year group to become our mascot! In our reading lessons, pupils will be learning a range of strategies for effective use of these Superpowers, such as using graphic organisers.
